PROFILE OF BRIGADIER GENERAL COSMAS BRETU ALHASSAN

Brigadier General Cosmas Bretu Alhassan was born on 1 April 1960 at Abrumase in the Northern Region of Ghana.  Brigadier General CB Alhassan had his tertiary education at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology where he obtained Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Civil Engineering between 1978 and 1982.  He is a proud holder of Master of Science in Defence Studies which he obtained from the University of Madras, India from 1999 – 2000; Masters in Strategic Studies which he obtained from the University of Ibadan, Nigeria in 2015; Postgraduate Certificate in Public Administration from Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA) among others.

He was enlisted into the Ghana Army in 1984 and had the privilege to further his Basic Military Training at the Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst in the United Kingdom as a result of his brilliance and hard work. His Arm of Service is Army (Engineering).  He has also pursued all his Military courses commensurate with his rank.  These include Platoon Commanders Course – Army Combat Training Schools, Teshie; Engineer Young Officers’ Course – College of Military Engineering, Pune, India; Junior Staff Course – Command and Staff College, Jaji, Nigeria; Combat Team Commanders Course – Army Combat Training School, Teshie; Senior Staff Course – Ghana Armed Forces Command and Staff College, Teshie and Defence Services Staff College, Wellington, India.  He is also a Fellow of the National Defence College, Abuja, Nigeria.

Brigadier General CB Alhassan has also occupied various appointments both home and abroad.  Among these appointments are Assistant Engineer, Ghana Highways Authority, Sunyani; Troop Commander, Adjutant, Squadron Commander and Second-in-Command all at 48 Engineer Regiment.  Others include Platoon Commander and Instructor, Ghana Military Academy; Company Commander, Ghana Broadcasting House; General Staff Officer III (Operations and Training), 1 Brigade Headquarters, Accra; Chief Training Officer, Ghana Military Academy; Asst Comdt, GAFCSC (JD), Teshie; Director Engineer Services, General Headquarters, Burma Camp; Assistant Chief of Staff (Ops and Trg), GHQ, Burma Camp; Deputy Director Plans, GHQ (Plans and Development); Chief Operations Officer, Northern Command Headquarters, Kumasi (which is now christened) HQ Central Command and Directing Staff, Ghana Armed Forces Command and Staff College, Junior Division.  He is currently the General Officer Commanding Central Command.

Appointments held on International Peace Support Operations include Chief, Best Practices and Knowledge Management Officer, MONUC, Kinshasa, DR Congo; Chief Military Training Officer, UNAMSIL, Freetown, Sierra Leone; Combat Engineer Operations Staff Officer, UNIFIL, Lebanon; ADC to Chief Military Observer, UNAMIR, Rwanda; General Staff Officer II (Operations), ECOMOG Headquarters, Liberia; Engineer Detachment Second-in-Command, UNIFIL, Lebanon; Engineer Troop Commander, UNIFIL, Lebanon and many more.  He has also been decorated with UNIFIL, UNAMSIL, UNAMIR, MONUC, ECOMOG, & 50th Anniversary medals.  His hobbies are playing and watching soccer and volleyball.  Brigadier General CB Alhassan is married with five children.
