Major General William Azuri Ayamdo
Maj Gen William Azure Ayamdo was enlisted into the Ghana Military Academy (GMA) on 7 January 1980 after completing Bawku Secondary School. After a short period of training at GMA he was selected to continue his training at the Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst from where he graduated on 31 July 1981.
On his returned to Ghana, he severed in several units including 4 Bn – Kumasi, Jungle Warfare School (JWS) – Achiase, Military Academy and Training School (MATS) – Teshie, 64 Infantry Regiment and the Department of Defence Intelligence (GHQ DI). While serving in the above units, he undertook his entire career course both in Ghana and overseas. He trained at the Ranger School in the USA in 1984, attended the Junior Staff Course in Jaji Nigeria, pursue artillery training in China and did Intelligence courses in the USA. He also held several appointment within the Ghana Armed Forces including Commanding Officer (CO) of 64 Infantry Regiment 2001, Commanding Officer (CO) UNAMSIL, GHANBATT 4, Deputy Commander, Ghana Military Academy (GMA), Deputy Director General Defence Intelligence (DI) and later became the Director General of Defence Intelligence (DI) in 2013.
He was appointed the Commandant Military Academy and Training Schools (MATS) and promoted Maj-Gen on 1 July 2016, the appointment he currently holds. Between 2003 and 2016, at various periods he was in-charge of the National Counterterrorism Centre at the National Security Council Secretariats (NSCS).
He has vast experience in international Peace Support Operations (IPSO) in Lebanon, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Afghanistan and Pakistan as part of formed troops and Military Observers. He is a fellow in Counterterrorism of the National Defence University, Washington DC and a member of the Royal College of Defence Studies (RCDS), London, UK. Until his current appointment as Acting Chief of the Army Staff, he was the Commandant MATS.
